Magnet propelled motor

Filed under: Environment, Ideas!, magnets — barrettorama @ 10:30 pm

I’ve not found much information on Steorn’s contraption. What I have seen sounds pretty sweet.

Wikipedia link has some “information” about their magnet motor.

It’s probably fake. But I like sci-fi so I’ll keep watching their progress.

Nintendo DS PDA app

Filed under: Computer Related, Ideas!, Software, Videogames — barrettorama @ 11:22 am

Nintendo is releasing a Web browser in the states not too far from now.
I would love to see them go a step farther.

Some Ideas:

  • Email
  • Lists
  • Contact list
  • VOIP
  • Network tools would be sweet too(ping, tracert, telnet, VNC, etc), of course Nintendo will always throw in that one thing that Wii would never think of.

Battery life is great on these things, mine gets about 10 hours of play for most stuff. It can sit in standby for a couple weeks at least.

One other thing I heard about was a card reader, SD was the report. This would be nice to view pictures, and be able to use it as a MP3 player. What geek wouldn’t want to (easily)plop linux on there and run their own webserver from their pocket? (Is that a webserver in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?)
I know this would open it up to piracy, so it will probably never happen.

Update:
I’ve been reading around some on this subject, Some are skeptical of it. Some I have seen say it would reduce battery life… that’s just silly, it would be pretty much displaying a screen, utilizing wi-fi, and saving data. I’m sure it would be no more taxing than me playing sudoku (which lasts for a couple weeks without recharging, I play it daily when i sit on my throne.) Another pessimism was the price point. I’ve not really seen anything released over 30 or 35 bucks. Everything needed for this setup is already used somewhere in some games. It would not cost much for development; I’d bet they could throw something sweet together and sell it for 20 bucks a pop.
And the last point: Mostly because Nintendo has stated that they want to focus their energy on games for their systems. I do agree on that point, they are a game company, and a damn fine one at that. And That’s fine, Initiate interest in the idea and turn it over to a 3rd party, and get it out that way; that’s what they are doing with Opera.

Plum Collection software

Plum looks like a really innovative idea for data collection and retrieval. I’ve not yet used it, but I love the idea. Check it out, sign up, see what happens.

Chip Clip with a real magnet

Filed under: Ideas!, magnets — barrettorama @ 5:34 am

You should go glue a strong magnet to a chip clip.
Chips hanging off your fridge would be cool.
Go do it now.

Seatbelt Lawn Chair

Filed under: Ideas! — barrettorama @ 10:44 pm

This is just pure genius
Seatbelt Lawn chair::Wastelands of Suburbia
or
Seatbelt Lawn chair::MAKE

I have to redo my broken lawn chair, I may even do all of them.
My only concern would be that seatbelts seem to soak up liquid pretty well. Seeing as these chairs will stay outside all of the time, something needs to be done to protect them.
Any suggestions for eliminating this issue?

Ideas I’ve already had:
-bees wax: not good for hot days(or hot asses, and my ass is hot in more than one way)
-windshield/bathtub water repellant: Not sure this works for cloth
-plastic wrap(like for food): It’s not food and it will blow away
-Magnets: hmmm… maybe if…. nope
-I’m reading “survivor” by Chuck Palahniuk: Maybe this will fulfill my home economics desires.

Finger sniff authentication

Filed under: Computer Related, Ideas!, Smell — barrettorama @ 12:47 am

It’s a nose for your computer. It goes on the monitor.

It will be Voice activated, So you must have a microphone.

“Smell my finger” will activate it.

0 friction mouse (Maglev)

Filed under: Ideas!, magnets — barrettorama @ 12:31 am

-1 sheet of magnet film stuff Avery brand
-3 or 4 Refrigerator magnets Radioshack

and some super glue or something sticky.

If I were a betting man, I’d say you could stick those magnets (Or even some slices of the magnet sheet) on the bottom of the mouse. Should maglev your mouse. I’m going to make one tonight.

Update:
OK, I was messing around with this some, and those sheet o’ magnets suck. They really don’t seem to have poles. I tried some ceramic fridge magnets, they repelled properly, but they were just too thick. Maybe if they were imbedded in the mouse?
I’d like to try some NdFeB magnets. Quantity and price below are assuming a mouse pad of around 7.5″ and a few magnets on the bottom of the mouse.
-NdFeB Disc, 1/2 in. x 1/16 in.qty 200 around 70 bucks.
-1.5″ x 0.75″ x 0.125″ Qty 70, around 70 bucks.
-9mm x 1mm Disc Magnet Qty 200, around 40 bucks.

This Is the one I will probably try, it has free samples of other stuff too. woo free stuff. They are also thinner magnets:
-D032D ~ 1/2″ Dia x 1/32″ Thick NdFeB Disc Magnet again, about 70 bucks for 300

They should be small enough, when taped to the bottom of the mouse, to allow the “laser beam” to take it’s pictures.
I really don’t play video games, but this might end up being pretty nice fo’ spreadshizneeting. As long as the magnetic field doesn’t destroy the mouse :)
Now…. Do I spend the money on magnets?
