Magnet propelled motor

Filed under: Environment, Ideas!, magnets — barrettorama @ 10:30 pm

I’ve not found much information on Steorn’s contraption. What I have seen sounds pretty sweet.

Wikipedia link has some “information” about their magnet motor.

It’s probably fake. But I like sci-fi so I’ll keep watching their progress.

Chip Clip with a real magnet

You should go glue a strong magnet to a chip clip.
Chips hanging off your fridge would be cool.
Go do it now.

0 friction mouse (Maglev)

Filed under: Ideas!, magnets — barrettorama @ 12:31 am

-1 sheet of magnet film stuff Avery brand
-3 or 4 Refrigerator magnets Radioshack

and some super glue or something sticky.

If I were a betting man, I’d say you could stick those magnets (Or even some slices of the magnet sheet) on the bottom of the mouse. Should maglev your mouse. I’m going to make one tonight.

Update:
OK, I was messing around with this some, and those sheet o’ magnets suck. They really don’t seem to have poles. I tried some ceramic fridge magnets, they repelled properly, but they were just too thick. Maybe if they were imbedded in the mouse?
I’d like to try some NdFeB magnets. Quantity and price below are assuming a mouse pad of around 7.5″ and a few magnets on the bottom of the mouse.
-NdFeB Disc, 1/2 in. x 1/16 in.qty 200 around 70 bucks.
-1.5″ x 0.75″ x 0.125″ Qty 70, around 70 bucks.
-9mm x 1mm Disc Magnet Qty 200, around 40 bucks.

This Is the one I will probably try, it has free samples of other stuff too. woo free stuff. They are also thinner magnets:
-D032D ~ 1/2″ Dia x 1/32″ Thick NdFeB Disc Magnet again, about 70 bucks for 300

They should be small enough, when taped to the bottom of the mouse, to allow the “laser beam” to take it’s pictures.
I really don’t play video games, but this might end up being pretty nice fo’ spreadshizneeting. As long as the magnetic field doesn’t destroy the mouse :)
Now…. Do I spend the money on magnets?
