Search Engine Terms – Finger sniff

Filed under: Computer Related, Smell — barrettorama @ 1:22 am

I’m pretty happy about my search engine terms, They are very accurate.
I especially like the fact that someone searched for “finger sniff”. The fact that if you search for finger sniff on Google, my blog comes up first. Or number 2 finger sniff on MSN.
It’s a proud moment in finger sniff history!

Chip Clip with a real magnet

Filed under: Ideas!, magnets — barrettorama @ 5:34 am

You should go glue a strong magnet to a chip clip.
Chips hanging off your fridge would be cool.
Go do it now.

Amazon S3 and Altexa

Filed under: Computer Related, Software, money — barrettorama @ 3:34 am

A friend turned me on to the Amazon Simple Storage Service the other day.
I needed a backup service for some files. Starting up a business, I’ve been accumulating some data I really don’t want to lose, so I don’t want to worry or spend to much on backup solutions.

For 12 bucks for a year of service, a gig of space, and backup software; I don’t think it’s too bad.

It’s Ok for speed. And I think it would be OK for most basic users.

The software interface is pretty. I’d say it has all the basics.
Some things I’d like to see:

  • Reporting, maybe to CSV
  • Backup Time adjustments:This they could save themselves some bandwidth money on.

ALTEXA

Jungle Disk looks pretty cool.

Update: Nintendo Vs. All other recent game systems

Filed under: Videogames — barrettorama @ 11:23 pm

Speaking with a friend that owns a video game shop about his world, There is not really much buzz about the PS3, and the XBox… well ya know it’s an XBox.

PS3 churning out like 12, because that’s all the processors they have for it so far.
Sony has a lot of people really aggravated with them, not just customers, but the people who make the games. No “playable” games at the expo’s. Suggested Dong/Banana controller. Playing catch up with the motion sensor(which will undoubted be a joke).

XBox, Pretty much completely failing in Japan, at least they have 2 sweet games coming out for it there now, but still nothing I’d actually play for the US system.
I like it better than the original. The controller is nice….

So… the Nintendo Wii.
Churning out like millions of Wii’s from Mario’s loins. Just like some of that crazy anime with all those tentacles.
It has a stupid name, but it’s fun. I hope the fans of it dub themselves Wiitards, I know I’m one. The Wiimotes are going to rock. I cannot wait to play tennis, Golf, Zelda, the Truck driving game, the shoot people with the gun game. Mario Paint! and Fuck There has to be jump rope game(probably Wario) somewhere in the mix, I cannot wait for this either. I’m Wiizzing right in my pants, and it’s getting everywhere. And guess what else, There is going to be like 12 of them at every store when I want to purchase one. Games 50 bucks system still tentative, I’m guessing 200ish. I’ll take 2.

Damn… I didnt realize I was this passionate about it. Maybe I’ll start a Wiilegion and Mario will be my prophet.

Update:
Looking around at the dev kit prices; PS3 between 30 and 50k, Wii between 1.5 and 3k. Not saying PS3 will not have some cool games. but that’s all overhead for the developer. If a small developer can develop and produce and distribute a game for under 50k, Think about all of the possibilities. Then throw in that they may not have to make physical product with the wii downloads. this price could drop to like 10k.

Update again: PS3
Adapter? What the shit is this?
Wii has ports for GC controllers(4) and Memory cards(2), and an SD slot!
Not to mention you will be able to download NES through 64 games…. Not all of them… but it will probably be enough of them to make you happy.

Nintendo DS PDA app

Filed under: Computer Related, Ideas!, Software, Videogames — barrettorama @ 3:38 pm

Nintendo is releasing a Web browser in the states not too far from now.
I would love to see them go a step farther.

Some Ideas:

  • Email
  • Lists
  • Contact list
  • VOIP
  • Network tools would be sweet too(ping, tracert, telnet, VNC, etc), of course Nintendo will always throw in that one thing that Wii would never think of.

Battery life is great on these things, mine gets about 10 hours of play for most stuff. It can sit in standby for a couple weeks at least.

One other thing I heard about was a card reader, SD was the report. This would be nice to view pictures, and be able to use it as a MP3 player. What geek wouldnt want to (easily)plop linux on there and run their own webserver from their pocket? (Is that a webserver in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?)
I know this would open it up to piracy, so it will probably never happen.

Guess where I’m heading on my next vacation?

Yep, you guessed it, Austria.

IE7

Filed under: Computer Related — barrettorama @ 5:36 pm

(Writing this in Firefox using performancing)
I downloaded IE7 last night. I was skeptical.
As usual with IE (and from what I remember firefox too), I had to turn off the smooth scrolling, I just don’t like it.

Pros:

  • Tabs, and well done
  • Speed, much faster than old IE
  • RSS, very well done, and the search is to die for. (I think even my mom will be able to use RSS now)

Cons:
-Drag and drop page on the home button (I know, silly. But I’m used to it.)
-RSS feeds do not auto update (I set mine to 15 minutes).
-Has some pretty bad caching problems… very anoying.

I am pretty pleased with it so far. I will update the pros and cons as I run across them.
Let me know your thoughts, I wouldn’t mind seeing what other think.

Nintendo Vs. All other game systems c(a)(o)ming out

BR-DVD vs. HD-DVD Predictions and Assumptions

Filed under: Videogames — barrettorama @ 3:13 am

First assumption, partially taken from some hearsay statistics. 18% of TV users in the US have HD capabilities with their TV. Of those 18%ers, only about 2% actually know what’s up; the rest are “John Q’s”, Like my Parents. (No offense John).

My prediction is that Therefor they will not “really” be interested in HD quality Movies for an extra expense. Let’s just say for fun a BR/HD is $25 and a regular DVD is $20. My Mom is not going to buy the BR/HD disk, because she would then have to have purchased a $200 BR/HD player. The difference to “John Q” is not as great as the difference between that beat up copy of footloose on VHS that my mom has watched like 20 times and the new digitally remastered version she can get for $12 in the bargain bin of *expletive*-mart.

Second assumption, Sony and Microsoft “Will” Release their Video Game/Home entertainment boxes that will plug into.

Lets say for future projections the number hobbles to 20%. 20% of Americas TV’s now will be able to play BR/HD content. And the rest still have good ole DVD to fall back on (as long as their PS3 can play DVD movies, which at this point is doubtful). And they have just or previously purchased a 300-600 dollar device to do so. This is of course assuming that all 3% of Knowledgeable users, and all 17% of John Q’s are interested in Video gaming.

I just want it for my backups at work. Screw video stuff right now, Let the Computer nerds like myself decide which is better and build it on that format. Ok $ony? OK M$?
I dont remember where I was going with this, but I feel better now.

*No real facts were referenced in this article(other than my mom likes footloose, I mean shit, who doesnt?), nor were animals harmed.
